Indigenous Peoples and Communities

The term “people” refers to collectivities that, while in most cases, are recognized as part of a nation,
they are not under a homogeneous national identity. These collectivities are rather differentiated
identities that build and claim their national membership differently.

Raizal
community
‎

They are the original inhabitants of the San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina islands.  They descend directly from the union between Europeans and African slaves.

Raizal people are mainly distinguished by their culture, language (creole), religion (baptists), and their historical west-Indian-like history, like Jamaica and Haiti’s.

Rom
Community
‎

Someone is considered Rom if he/she descends by father (patrilineal descent) to this community. This organization places people in a specific group of kinship, which fundamentally delves around an authority emanated from a man of recognized prestige or knowledge.

This man, in turn, is linked to other groups of kinship through various alliances. Hence, they all share a common origin, language, legal system, social organization, and a unique sense of aesthetics that truly motivate them to believe in individual and collective freedom. 

Black and Afro-Colombian communities

Black communities: They are families with Afro-Colombian ancestry, primarily found on the Colombian Pacific Coast. They have developed their very own culture thanks to their shared history, traditions, and customs, which, in turn, enable them to be aware of what their identity is and how it distinguishes them from other racial groups. 

Afro-Colombian population: This is an Afro-descendant population born in Colombian territory and currently settled throughout the national territory. They still preserve some ethnic and cultural traits from their African heritage. 

Palenque communities: This is an Afro-Colombian population native from Palenque de San Basilio (in Mahates municipality, Bolivar Province, Colombia) and other places where Black Cimarrons (cimarronaje) settled in territories such as Palenque de San José de Uré, among others. These communities preserve varied identity traits, such as speaking a creole derived from African dialects.

These are ethnic collectivities of Amerindian origin that have remained over time since immemorial times. They have inhabited these territories long before the arrival of the colonizers.

Thanks to this, they differ from the Black, Afro-Colombian, Raizal, Palenque, and Rom people, who are also recognized as distinct ethnic groups in Colombia.
